Goal: working to build confidence and strength in the basics in order to approach more complex equations and understanding. Students are encouraged to try their best, ask questions and understand that there are multiple ways to solve problems. Extra help is always available IF it is communicated and taken advantage of!
We are currently working in Shape and Space! Take a look at what is coming up/what has been covered!

Shape and Space
Perimeter - the distance around P = side + side+ side + side Measured in UNITS (eg. m, cm, mm) - students need to know how to find the perimeter when all sides are given as well as when there are unknown sides Area - the space inside. A= length x width Measured in UNITS squared (eg. m, cm, mm) - students need to know how to find when all sides are given as well as when there are unknown sides and when shapes are not rectangles (L shaped where students must break the shape into 2 rectangles to solve (see practice sheet attached) Volume - the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a 3D shape V = length x width x height (or think AREA x height) Measured in UNITS cubed |
Content Covered in Unit: NUMBERS
Place Value - be ready to name what numbers are in each place value up to the millions
Standard Form - how we normally see numbers Ex. 568
Expanded Form - showing the different place values in a number Ex. 500+60+8
Multiples - think skip counting. Ex. multiples of 2 are 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16
Factors - two numbers that divide evenly into another number Ex. factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12
Prime Numbers - only have 2 factors Ex. 5
Composite Numbers - have at least 3 factors Ex. 12

Grade 5 Review
It is important that students practice their basic facts at home to assist in understanding more complicated concepts. A review of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division has been completed in class. In Grade 6, students are expected to be able to complete the same operations but includes the use of numbers with decimals.
